WEST AUCKLAND TOWN FC

Whitley Bay 2-1 West Auckland Town [28/12/2024] – Match Report

A quick turnaround, and the last game of 2024. West travelled to Hillheads Park to take on Whitley Bay. They were sat one place below West in the league table, with four games in hand.

After coming off injured against Shildon, Joey Hope was missing from the squad for the trip. Joey joined defenders Liam Hegarty, Gary Brown and Liam Potter on the sidelines. West had the first meaningful opportunity after Whitley Bay goalkeeper Dan Gladstone pushed a Kyle Davis header wide in the 5th minute. Alfa Djalo and Mechack Kanda both had chances for the home side within the first 10 minutes, but neither shot was on target. West had a further couple of half chances themselves to take the lead, but in similar fashion to Whitley Bay, they couldn’t find the target. That changed just before half-time, with 39 minutes played. West capitalised on a corner that wasn’t cleared. Thankfully for West, Charlie Wood was on hand to score his third league goal of the season. Djalo had one last chance after being put through on the left, but his effort went wide of the far post. West went in at half-time with the lead.

The opening of the second half was fairly uneventful. West were looking to manage the game and maintain their lead. It wasn’t until the 81st minute that the game changed. Bay’s Kyle Cockburn had a shot which struck the post, the rebound landing at the feet of Mechack Kanda, who scored to make it 1-1. West made two substitutions in the final 10 minutes. Lee Hume replacing Jermaine Metz and Charlie Berry coming on for West’s goalscorer Charlie Wood. Leo Robinson and Luke Bailey both had missed chances and the game seemed destined to finish in a draw. However, Whitley Bay were awarded a free-kick in the 94th minute in a dangerous area. Callum Larmouth stepped up and scored what was the last kick of the game. A bitter blow to West in what has been a difficult month.
